Healing Through Music: How Rhythm Helps Your Child Feel Safe and Strong

Music: A Simple Way to Heal and Grow

At the Glorietta Klarich Foundation, we believe that music is more than just a song. For a child who has been through hard times, music is a way to feel safe, calm, and strong again. When a child goes through a "storm" in life, their brain can get stuck in a "scary" place. This makes it hard for them to sit still, listen to teachers, or even feel happy. Some of the time, talking about it doesn't help because the part of the brain that is "scared" doesn't use words. It uses feelings.

That is why we use rhythm.

Rhythm goes where words cannot.

The Three Floors of the Brain

To understand how music helps, imagine your child’s brain is like a three-story house.

The First Floor: The Safety Floor

This is the most important part of the house. It’s where breathing and heartbeats happen. When a child is stressed or has seen scary things, this floor feels like it’s on fire. They might feel jumpy, angry, or like they want to run away.

• How Music Helps: A steady, slow drumbeat or a simple rhythm works like a rocking chair. It tells the body, "You are safe right now." It puts out the fire so the child can finally relax and breathe.

The Second Floor: The Feelings Floor

This is where we feel love and learn how to get along with family and friends. Hard times can make this floor feel very lonely or messy.

• How Music Helps: Playing music with other people—even just clapping together—helps a child feel like they belong. It builds a bridge back to other people, so they don't have to feel so alone.

The Third Floor: The Thinking Floor

This is the top of the house. This is where children learn to read, do math, and make good choices. But here is the secret: You cannot get to the top floor if the bottom floors are a mess.

• How Music Helps: Learning to play an instrument is like exercise for the brain. It builds the "stairs" so the child can get to the top floor. Once the bottom floors are calm, the child can finally focus and do well in school.

Giving Your Child a Voice

Hard times can make a child feel like they have no say in what happens to them. They might feel small or helpless.

When a child picks up an instrument at the Glorietta Klarich Foundation, they are the boss. If they want to play loud, they can. If they want to play soft, they can. They are in control of the sound. This helps them realize they can be in control of their own life, too.

We are here to help your child find their "voice" and turn their "scary" feelings into beautiful music.

“Bridging the gap between advocacy and the arts to ensure every child has a voice and every voice has a song.”
